MUSIC FROM KABUL 2001
sound tapes, cane reed, raw earth

It was September 2001, and I got to see lots of documentaries about Afghanistan on TV. That’s how I learned that music was simply banned in that country, and of the sinister custom of striping guilty citizens’ tapes and exposing them like guts on butchers’ hooks in front of their house… The so-criticized wearing of the burkha seemed totally irrelevant and fashion-fad-like compared to this mere suppression of such an important part of culture as music is.
